Staying Ahead of the Heat Wave
An Extreme Heat Warning has covered San Diego County recently, with inland valleys and foothills pushing past 100 and even our coastal service areas sitting in the mid-90s - well above a normal August day. Landscapes that looked fine two weeks ago are stressed now, and we're getting calls about lawns going crunchy at the edges and planting beds that won't hold moisture. Most of it comes down to irrigation systems that were dialed in for spring, not for a heat spike. Here's what to check this week.
Know Your District's Rules
This is the part homeowners get wrong most often: North County isn't served by one water agency. Depending on your address, you're a customer of Vista Irrigation District, the City of Oceanside, Carlsbad Municipal Water District, Olivenhain Municipal Water District, San Dieguito Water District, Santa Fe Irrigation District, or the City of Del Mar - and watering-day rules, time-of-day restrictions, and enforcement differ by district and can change with drought conditions.Before you adjust your controller, check your specific district's current rules rather than going by what a neighbor two miles away is doing. Most districts still restrict daytime irrigation to before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. even without formal drought restrictions in place, since that's when evaporation loss is lowest.
Signs Your System is Already Behind
Walk your property in the late afternoon and look for these:- Footprints that don't spring back on turf. If grass stays compressed after you walk across it, the lawn is underwatered and moisture stressed.
- Cupped or folded leaves on shrubs and perennials, especially anything not on drip. Leaves curl to reduce surface area and water loss - it's an early stress signal, not a cosmetic issue.
- Runoff on slopes before a cycle finishes. In heat, we sometimes see people compensate by running zones longer, but soil can only absorb water so fast. Longer single cycles on a slope just mean more runoff, not more absorption.
- Dry rings around emitter heads on drip systems, which usually means a clogged or disconnected emitter rather than a scheduling problem.
Frequency Beats Duration in a Heat Spike
The instinct in a heat wave is to run irrigation longer. The better move is usually to run it more often, in shorter cycles, especially on the sandy, fast-draining soils common along our coastal areas. Sandy soil can't hold much water at depth, so a single long cycle mostly drains past the root zone and is wasted. Splitting a 15-minute run into two 7- to 8-minute cycles a few hours apart lets water absorb between applications instead of running off or draining through.If you're in heavier clay soil further inland - parts of Vista and Rancho Santa Fe in particular - the opposite risk applies: clay holds water at the surface longer, so overwatering during a heat spike can suffocate roots and invite fungal issues even while the top layer looks dry.
